Reino das Catacumbas
The deepest of the seven — the kingdom beneath the cemetery, where the bones are kept and the old pacts are stored. Catacumbas governs secrecy, deep magic, sealed contracts and the things that should not be undone.
The Catacumbas is the underground kingdom — the vault of memory, the seal of pacts, the place where the deepest workings are buried so that they may hold. It is the kingdom of the long term: foundations laid here are not easily lifted.
It is not consulted lightly. The terreiro understands the Catacumbas as the final court of Quimbanda, where what is sealed is sealed in the bone of the earth itself. Petitioners come prepared to honor the seal for as long as they live.
King of the Seven Vaults
The supreme sovereign of this kingdom. No deep working concludes without his recognition.
Lord of the Seven Graves
Keeper of the buried pacts. He is the one who descends into the earth to retrieve or seal what is asked.
The Velvet
Patron of the quiet workings, of secrecy maintained over decades. Smooth, slow, irreversible.
Queen of the Vaults
Feminine sovereign of the kingdom. She rules the buried inheritance of women, the hidden knowledge passed from generation to generation.
Offerings are buried — never simply set down — at the cemetery's deepest point, where the worker has permission to dig. The earth is replaced as it was. Nothing marks the spot.
No work in this kingdom is undertaken without authorization from a master of the terreiro. The Catacumbas does not receive uninitiated petitioners.
Laroyê Rei das Sete Catacumbas! — the salutation must be answered by an inner stillness before the work proceeds.
A hole is dug at the consecrated spot. Its depth corresponds to the seriousness of the request.
The sigil is drawn at the bottom of the hole in black chalk or charcoal.
The offering is laid in the earth. The petitioner speaks the terms aloud and accepts them. The hole is covered with both hands.
The worker leaves without speaking. They do not name the working to any living person for seven years.
The Sealing
A formal pact buried in consecrated earth. Used for the foundational protections of a worker's life: marriage, vocation, the safety of a child.
The Anchoring in the Vault
An iron point — usually a small trident — is buried under the master's direction. It binds the worker to the kingdom as a partner for life.
Offering of the Vaults
The classical despacho: clay vessel of cachaça, black candles, cigars and red earth, buried at midnight on a Monday in the cemetery's deepest ground.
The Release of a Pact
Performed only by an elder, only when both the petitioner and the kingdom consent. The pact is unburied, undone, and the earth is reconsecrated.
